Ultrasound imaging uses high-frequency sound waves to produce images of what’s happening inside your body. This tool helps confirm key details:
- Viability: Is the pregnancy developing as expected? Is there a heartbeat? As many as 26% of all pregnancies end in miscarriage, which may need medical monitoring or treatment.
- Gestational Age: How far along are you? This detail helps determine your options. For example, medical abortion is FDA-approved through 10 weeks gestation.
- Location: Is the pregnancy in the uterus? A pregnancy outside the uterus, also known as an ectopic pregnancy, can cause life-threatening complications and requires immediate medical treatment.
