How Pregnancy Tests Work

Pregnancy tests detect hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin), a hormone your body produces after the fertilized egg attaches to the uterine lining and the placenta begins to form. When hCG levels rise enough, a test can detect them and provide a positive result.

When Should You Test?

The best time to take a test is one to two days after a missed period, when hCG is more likely to have risen to detectable levels. Additionally, testing first thing in the morning, when your urine is more concentrated, can improve accuracy.

If you take a test too early, you might get a false negative.

What Happens After a Positive Test?

After a positive urine test result, it is beneficual to confirm the pregnancy. We offer obstetrical ultrasounds to verify the pregnancy’s location, estimate how far along you are, and determine if the pregnancy is developing. Eligibility for a same-day ultrasound will be determined at the time of your appointment.

This information is crucial as you consider abortion or other pregnancy options.
